EUreka3D-XR featured at the International Archives Congress 2025

Barcelona, 28 October 2025

David Iglésias from CRDI – Ajuntament de Girona, one of the EUreka3D-XR partners, presented the project to an international audience of archival and records management professionals. The speech focused on the role of archives in the 3D transformation of heritage, and was part of the programme of this outstanding event organized by International Council on Archives.

Archival records play nowadays a crucial role in the recreation of heritage objects in 3D, as is the case in one of the EUreka3D-XR scenarios that recreates the historical wall of Girona. In the framework of the EUreka3D-XR project, CRDI – Ajuntament de Girona will recreate the city’s medieval wall, which was demolished in the early 20th century. This initiative serves as a case study for assessing the archival contribution to the creation of 3D digital content related to heritage.

The speech The Role of Archives in the 3D Transformation of Heritage addressed the importance of archival records in the progress of recreating heritage objects in 3D. Technological advancements now allow the creation of 3D models from photographs and films. In this context, archival documentation takes on a central role, not only due to the extensive photographic and audiovisual collections available but also because of cartographic and textual records that enable the recreation of lost heritage.

The fourth edition of the International Archives Congress took place in Barcelona, with around 2,000 professionals from more than 100 countries around the world. The International Archives Congress is the most important event for the archival community, held in the city of Barcelona after taking over from other major cities such as Seoul, Mexico City and Abu Dhabi.
