The Monument to Velázquez is a bronze statue honoring Diego Velázquez, one of Spain’s greatest classical painters. The sculpture depicts Velázquez seated, in a serene pose, holding a paintbrush in one hand and a painter’s palette in the other, dressed in period clothing. The figure stands on a stone pedestal. The sculpture presides over the entrance to the main façade of the Prado Museum. It was created by Aniceto Marinas (1866-1953) on a pedestal designed by Vicente Lampérez, on the initiative of the Círculo de Bellas Artes.
The monument was restored in 2025, with this 3D reproduction corresponding to the final result of the restoration work. The restoration was aimed at preserving the bronze work, the limestone pedestal and the granite base. It included cleaning, removal of oxidation and protective treatments.
The model is published as open access record in the EUreka3D Data Hub, aggregated in Europeana in the context of Twin.it for Spain, with collaboration of Spanish National Aggregator HISPANA.
